Opening words and invocation 29 Feb 2004

We reach out for inspiration,
our souls thirsting like a parched land,
after a week in which the attention we give to the work of our hands
far too closely resembles worship.

Let us remember with joy, therefore, this morning
where we come from and where we are bound.
If our spirits are wearied
and our hearts numb,
what better place to gather than here
where we can recall the days of old
and reflect on all God’s deeds;
where we can be reminded once again that
all we need is to do justly,
and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with our God.

In this clear morning,
help us to know your faithful love, O God,
Do not hide your face from us;
hear our prayers,
even those unspoken
when we know not how to pray.
Teach us the way that we should go,
for to you we lift up our souls.
May your gracious spirit
guide us on level ground.

(Adapted from Psalm 143 and Micah 5-6)
