Opening words and invocation 30 Mar 2003

Peace is not the product of terror or fear.
Peace is not the silence of cemeteries.
Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all.
It is right and it is duty.
It is hard work. It is our work, and it is God’s work.

Whisper the word. O God,
and we shall be healed.
In this hour, in this place, and among these people
establish a home for the weary,
a shelter for the fearful,
a place of renewal for the troubled,
a refuge for the seeker.
Embolden us not just to move toward the light
but to be that light, reflecting the spirit of the kingdom of God,
into the hidden and sometimes hideous caverns of the human person,
including our own hearts, which so often resist
the call to follow in Jesus Christ’s footsteps
among the poor and the aching,
among those who have no word for peace.

Adapted from and inspired by the words of Archbishop Oscar Romero, martyr
