At its Oct. 4, 2004 meeting, the Board of Trustees approved a charter for the new Worship Committee. Rev. Morn and Rob Bertram will take the next steps in organizing the committee.
Worship Committee Charter
Purpose: The purpose of the Worship Committee of the Universalist National Memorial Church is to promote excellence in our worship services in accordance with our mission statement, to assist the minister in planning and carrying out worship services, and to provide a conduit for input and feedback about worship from all members of the church community.
Responsibilities & Activities: The Worship Committee shall hold regularly scheduled meetings, as provided under Meetings below, to discuss issues related to worship and to assist the minister in making decisions on worship. Issues to be considered shall include, but not be limited to:
The Committee recognizes that the church bylaws (Article VII, Section 1) grant the pastor “charge of the spiritual life of the Church” and shall endeavor to assist the minister in the performance of that duty as it relates
to worship.
The Committee shall be mindful that a liberal religious community such as ours holds diverse opinions on worship and, therefore, shall provide ample opportunity for input and feedback from the congregation on any matter of importance regarding worship.
Composition: The Worship Committee shall consist of a chair (preferably a member of the Board of Trustees) and at least three additional committee members, which should include at least one musician, at least one liturgist, and at least one congregation member who is not involved in the music program and is not a liturgist. Any church member may volunteer to be a member of this committee. Liturgists are especially encouraged to be active committee members. Non-members are also welcome to participate in the committee’s discussions and activities, but do not have a vote. In accordance with the church bylaws (Article V, Section 3), the Board of Trustees shall appoint a Board member to the Committee and approve the Committee’s membership and chair.
Meetings: The Committee shall attempt to meet monthly during the main part of the church year (September to mid-June) and at least once during the summer. The Committee’s membership, meeting dates, and agendas shall be announced in the monthly Anchor newsletter and the weekly worship bulletin. The committee may also carry out its business by telephone and electronic mail.
Reports: The chair shall provide a written report monthly to the Board of Trustees on the Committee’s activities, shall provide information on those activities for the monthly Anchor newsletter, and shall provide a written report for the annual May congregational meeting.
Budget & Spending: The Committee shall make budget recommendations and request that the board of trustees allocate such funds from the annual budget as may be necessary to carry out its purpose, but does not have authority over any particular line item of the budget.
