Communion Sunday
11 a.m. Worship: “The Right Amount of Courage” Jeremiah 20:7-13, The Rev. Mary Katherine Morn preaching. Aristotle said courage is having the right amount of fear. With all the messages around us about what we have to fear, the right amount is hard to find. We will explore what courage is and how to find it.
June 23-27
UUA General Assembly -- Fort Worth, Texas
Sunday, June 26
10:30 a.m. Worship: "What If We Held a Human Sacrifice And Nobody Came?" Richard Hurst, preaching. The lectionary reading from the Hebrew Bible for the coming Sunday figures amongst the most disturbing in scripture-- what Jews called the Akedeh, or the binding of Isaac, from Genesis 22 in which God asks Abraham to make a "burnt offering" of his only son as an apparent act of loyalty to the divine sovereign. What might this passage say about what God wants from us, and about what we want from God? Can we abandon sacrifice, and still embrace with integrity and fullness human pain and suffering? Psalm 44, the so-called "Psalm of Protest," so long forbidden for liturgical use by the Rabbinate, will be the morning's responsive reading.
Tuesday, June 28
7 p.m. Dinner and focus group discussion regarding the ministerial search at the home of Rob Bertram (near Woodley Park metro stop).
SUMMER SERVICE SCHEDULE
Beginning on June 26th we will resume summer worship hours. Our worship service will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the main sanctuary. Casual summer attire is welcome. (We will be cooling the sanctuary before the service and then turning the very loud air conditioner off.) Please join us through the summer for intimate worship services.
More Future Events
Please reserve July 22nd for an outing with Mary Katherine and members and friends of Universalist National Memorial Church. On the Friday before Mary Katherine's last Sunday with us, we will be attending a Bowie Baysox baseball game.
