Dinner at Leland Place -- Revived

Now that the kitchen has been cleaned up, UNMC's long-standing ministry to the men of Leland Place is being revived after a hiatus of about a year and a half.

We begin on October 1 (postponed from September 17) and hope to continue monthly thereafter.

Volunteers are asked to RSVP to the office at 202-387-3411.

Leland Place, affiliated with S.O.M.E. (So Others Might Eat) is a transitional home for men recovering from homelessness and addiction. All of the men in the house have been through an initial three-month recovery program and, during their stay at Leland -- an additional three months -- they get assistance in looking for a job and an opportunity to save for a deposit on a place to live.

Volunteers gather at the church kitchen at 3 p.m., travel to Leland on North Capitol Street at 5 p.m., and finish dinner at about 6 p.m. They share the cost of the meal, reimbursing the designated "planner-shopper." The per volunteer share runs between $10 and $20 and includes the volunteer's own meal.

Over the years, the Leland Place dinners have offered UNMC members an extraordinary opportunity to grow in faith by meeting and talking with individuals in the process of transforming their lives.
