Declaration of Faith study sessions

The lunchtime discussion of the Declaration of Faith on Feb. 26 highlighted two key aspects of our spiritual community:

  • That each of the five principles in the Declaration of Faith is deeply cherished.
  • That we find great joy in the freedom we have at UNMC to interpret these principles and find our own meaning in them

Accordingly, to continue the discussion, the Worship Committee is organizing meditation and study sessions around each of the principles of the Declaration of Faith for five consecutive Sundays, March 12 - April 9.

A session at 10 a.m. will consist of time for both meditation and reflect on one of the principles. Then at 12:30 p.m., we will have a more conventional discussion session around that same principle. The Worship Committee hopes that having two sessions in two different formats will make it possible for more people to get more deeply into the core meaning of each principle. As background reading for these sessions, we are reprinting Dr. Fox's 1997 sermon, "What We Say Here," in which he examines each of the principles in the context of a liberal religious sensibility.

The Committee is looking for volunteers to each lead one of these sessions. If you're interested, please contact any member of the Worship Committee -- Rob Bertram (chair), Kirk Denton, Richard Hurst, Sue Mosher, and Donna Simonton.

The "homework assignments" that members and friends so faithfully completed have been collected and are available at the church, on the credenza in the vestibule, along with a very short summary of the themes discussed related to the use of an affirmation in worship and the possible action brainstormed by participants at the Feb. 26 meeting. Please contact the church office if you'd like to receive a copy of this document by email or postal mail.
