October Worship & Activity Schedule

Sunday, October 3
11 a.m. worship: Rev. Henley explores the parable of "The Friend Knocks at Midnight" from Luke 11:5-13.

Tuesday, October 5
7 p.m. UNMC Board of Trustees meeting*.

Saturday, October 9
10 a.m. work day, indoors and outdoors: clean up, rake up, put up. With coffee and muffins.

Sunday, October 10
11 a.m. worship: Rev. Henley preaches on "Do Unto Others" from the parable of the canceled debt, Matt. 18:23-35.

Tuesday, October 12
7 p.m. Social Action fellowship at Cantina Marina, 600 Water St. SW, Washington, DC. Look for the table reserved for us in the upstairs room.

Thursday, October 14, - Sunday, October 17
Unitarian Universalist Christian Fellowship revival: "Rediscovering Jesus and Communities of Hope," Horizon Unitarian Universalist Church, Carrollton, TX (near Dallas) - worship, workshops (including one led by Rev. Henley on Universalist Christianity), daily morning and evening prayer, Taizé, communion, baptism, prayer, healing, mission service project, and social gathering.

Saturday, October 16
2:30 p.m. Leland Place ministry: Gather in the church kitchen to a prepare a meal, then carpool to Leland Place, a halfway house on North Capitol Street for men in recovery from homelessness and addiction, and share the meal at about 5 p.m. RSVP to Dave Skidmore.

Sunday, October 17
11 a.m. worship: UNMC member Bob Sanderlin will be preaching on the lessons about God from A Course in Miracles.

12:15 p.m. lunch, discussion, & sharing: "What Do We Want from Our 21st Century Deacons?" - the first in a series of all-congregation events exploring how the deacons can best serve today's congregation and what qualities are key for tomorrow's deacons. The deacons extend a warm welcome to all to attend.

3 p.m. concert: UNMC music director Darryl Winston will be conducting The Wagner Symphonette in the Washington National Wagner Society's presentation of "Great Operatic Duets."

Sunday, October 24
11 a.m. worship: "Rejoicing, Rain, and Resurrection," Rev. Henley, on the prophet Joel 2:23-32. 

1 p.m. Interweave fall drag brunch at Nellie's Sports Bar, 900 U St. NW. Contact Ron Eanes for more information.

3-7 p.m. retreat: "Meet Your Inner Deacon" with Deacon Sue Mosher guiding us on a journey of sharing and prayer.

Sunday, October 31
11 a.m. worship: From the lessons of Paul, 2 Thessalonians 1:3-4, 11-12, Rev. Henley will share "Steadfast Love." We will also have our annual All Souls communion; all are welcome to participate.

12:30 p.m.: Discussion of UNMC website and other communications, with an eye toward a planned redesign. Please come and offer your suggestions and feedback.

FUTURE EVENTS

Saturday, November 6
2 p.m., Cedar Lane UU Church, Bethesda, MD: "The Ethics of Inclusion: Moral Implications," a lecture by the Rev. Carlton D. Pearson, on the ethical implications of universal love and the hope of world peace through mutual respect for different peoples and points of view, drawing from his difficult journey from being a highly successful Pentecostal minister to one who now embraces Universalism.

Sunday, November 21
12:30 p.m. small group discussions: "What Do We Want Our 21st Century Deacons to Do?"

Sunday, December 5
12:30 p.m. semi-annual congregational meeting and celebration of "What Do We Want Our 21st Century Deacons to Do?"

*All board and committee meetings at UNMC are open to everyone. The only exception is the Committee on Ministry (COM). If you have input for the COM see Devry Becker, Paula Harrison, Angela Khaminwa, or David Skidmore.
