Board of Trustees Resolution: Official Number of Members
Adopted 5 Jan 2004
Whereas: The Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations requires all congregations to report by Feb. 1 of each year their current number of members, such numbers being used to determine the “Fair Share” contribution of each congregation and the number of delegates to the annual General Assembly. (The number reported by UNMC in 2003 was 102.)
Whereas: The UUA Congregational Handbook states:
“It is contrary to the spirit in which this reported membership figure is used to include persons who were at one time active members but currently have no intention to participate in the congregation's activities or to support it financially, nor any desire to remain members. “For the purpose of reporting membership to the Unitarian Universalist Association, it is recommended that you include persons who have signed the membership list and meet any one of the following three conditions, as well as can be determined by a reasonable effort: 1. The person has participated in an activity of the congregation in the past year. 2. The person has made a recorded financial contribution since the beginning of the previous fiscal year. 3. The person expresses verbally or in writing a desire to remain a member.”
Whereas: The Registrar has consulted with Treasurer Brian Pepper to identify those members of record, already classified by the Registrar as inactive due to non-participation, who have not made a recent financial contribution, and has determined that UNMC has a total of 78 members meeting one of the three conditions in the UUA Congregational Handbook.
Be it resolved, therefore, that the Board of Trustees accepts the Registrar’s recommendation and directs the Registrar to report to the UUA by Feb. 1, 2004, that the UNMC has 78 members and to use that same number in any other reporting context. The Registrar shall revise the figure, as needed, to reflect the addition of new members; the resignation, transfer, or death of any current member; and any action that the congregation may take to remove members from the roll.
