Why Should You Give to UNMC?

Universalist National Memorial Church began its ministry in 1931 as the national representative of the Universalist Church of America, which merged in 1961 with the American Unitarian Association to form the Unitarian Univeralist Association of Congregations (UUA). UNMC is now a proud member congregation of the UUA, an association of more than one thousand congregations across the continent, bound together not by a common theology, but by a common covenant to seek truth in freedom.

We are a congregation committed to liberal Christian values, and we demonstrate our values by…

  • Affirming  the rights, worth and dignity of all people, including gays, lesbians, transgender individuals and others identifying as queer or questioning…
  • Supporting  outreach efforts that alleviate the effects of poverty in our local communities…
  • Standing  with victims of injustice through our participation in actions that raise awareness locally and nationally…
  • Reaching  beyond the bounds of traditional theology, and embracing ideas and perspectives that help us to live both thoughtfully and faithfully…
  • Developing ties to people and organizations of all religious backgrounds in an effort to deepen our appreciation for the traditions that inform their philosophies of peace and compassion…
  • Enriching  the lives of our neighbors by providing space for the artistic endeavors of our friends at The Spooky Action Theater and Washington International Chorus, and by presenting artistic programs of our own…

Each congregation within the UUA is self-governing and self-financing. This means that we rely on the generosity of members and friends of our organization to maintain our open sense of community, our historic building, our liberal Christian message, the legacy of Universalist Christianity and our mission to share innovative and life-giving perspectives on scripture with the world. Your gift will be used to sustain the ongoing ministry of this church and to expand our programs.
