Pastor David Gatton’s Thought for the Week

February 16, 2023 by UNMC Office

Our prayers go out to the families of both Israelis and Palestinians who have lost family members during the war.  It is both joyous and deeply sad to see hostages returned, knowing that they have lost loved ones, or still have family members held hostage.  What is one to feel?  Elation or tragedy?  The answer is both.  We were made deeply within our souls to hold such affections (emotions tinged with thought) at the same time.  Such complexity and capacity of the heart is what makes us human, perhaps made possible by the divine spark within us.

My prayer is that all this “death in war” (innocent Israelis and Palestinians) will lead to a solution of peace, finally, within the Middle East.  The Palestinians deserve a homeland, their homeland, as do the Israelis.  Experts say it may now be too “raw” for any peace to emerge.  But during this Advent season, why shouldn’t we hope for peace and love among these peoples created within the human race by one God?  Surely all this insanity can find a way to its end.

Why not pray for it, demand it?

Please join us Sunday, when we will explore “Strengthened to the End,” a message of hope and promise.
